PlayNotes Issue 7: Secret World Legends

For the finale of the series, I wanted to wait till today and check out Secret World Legends.

I loved the changes to the tutorial area.  The scariness level was way up.  There was a floor puzzle, a sneaking puzzle and a wall puzzle  and if people haven't played before, it's a great introduction to those play mechanics.

Last time around I created a character who used both magic (some zappy electrical looking stuff) and pistols.  It worked well sometimes but not so much others.  I kept swapping skills around into the (still limited) slots and just couldn't be satisfied with the fights.

This time I looked at all of the combinations and chose Warlock.   Her main skill is Blood Magic which produces a red radius of death.  I'm liking it.  The zombies still all attack in groups of five, so this covers them pretty nicely.  I'm not having to worry too much or at all about the placement of the targeting reticule.




Illustrating this weapon choice is a Book on my back.  A dang book just stuck there.  You may not be able to pick it out in the picture above, because my secondary weapon FOR HEALING is an Assault Rifle!  Bang, Bang! You're Healed!   Weirdest idea ever.


The quests are the same as they were previously, such as this set of traps in the Mining Museum.  That went pretty well, except I'm a fool for stepping into the range of security cameras.  Oops, forgot about the explosions.  I bought Metal Gear Solid or some other stealth game on the Steam sale last year.  I should fire that up and see if I can set a record for getting caught and killed.

The first time I played through this area, Kingsmouth, every quest made a big impression on me, and I remember them well.  Except I don't completely, so I keep going, oh yeah, this over here and it's not.  Getting ahead of myself.

Despite the whole Book/Assault Rifle thing, the character seems reasonably powerful.  I had no trouble with the Draug at the end of the road.


If I balance between hitting the left and right mouse buttons in a fight, I'm fine.  In one fight I was just using the Blood Magic alone, and poof I was dead.

Kingsmouth is as creepy as always.  I run down the street keeping an eye on zombie groups, but sometimes it sounds like there's one right on your tail and I find myself looking around over my shoulder frequently.

Didn't get too far tonight, just hanging out with ol' Shotgun Norma.



It's a great game, with a variety of quest types and combat options.  It couldn't have a more distinctive atmosphere.  For people like myself who have been reading horror tales and ghost stories for ages,  it doesn't get much better than this.

I appreciate the modern setting, and like the clothes.   I need money money money to buy more.  Maybe also a Book with a nicer cover.

  1. As you'll have noticed if you read my First Impressions, my feelings about the tutorial were the exact opposite of yours. I'm particularly curious about the apparent problems you had with the first class you used, which I think is the same on I used, the Gunslinger (chaos magic and pistols). All I ever did in the tutorial was spam LMB and everything died all the time. I never looked at my health bar because there never seemed to be any level of threat whatsoever.

    Did you ever play The Secret World? My feeling is that people who liked that won't like this but people who never tried it will be excited by what's left of what was so good about it. Not that much is left but there's still a veneer.

    It strikes me as being a bit like seeing a tribute band do a passably recognizable version of the group that they're trying to emulate - they wear the clothes, they play the songs, they even put on the the accents but they're never going to fool anyone who saw the originals that it's the real thing.

    1. I have purposefully not read anyone's posts about Legends yet so that I could form my own opinion. I'll be reading them now.
      Sure, I've played, but unless I have a great deal of trouble staying alive, I don't pay attention much to combat, so I can't say what my former choice was, since I killed off the character. So far as I've gone, the quests are the same as they were. I haven't done any investigative missions yet or started the main story arc, and I would expect there to be changes in those if anything. I understand completely how depressing it is to have a game changed out from under you.

  2. I feel the same as Bhag. I read a lot of things which people praise. All of that already was present, and often even better, in the original game.

    Apparently the simple one time fee of buying the base game stopped them from enjoying that, they rather now pay more on an exploitive F2P model for a watered down version of the original game.

    The original tutorial also was bad in teaching people what to do. But it really fit the theme of the game, while the new one has that graveyard sequence, which adds nothing to the story but instead -replaces- an interesting part of the original introduction, which matters a lot later in the story.

    Even worse, by just placing the whole graveyard sequence a tiny bit later the story and logic would have remained intact... :(

    1. Hi, Sylow, I'm going to read other' impressions and thoughts now I've started out myself. I personally was not a fan of the original opening sequences, and was relieved at the new beginning, which felt to me as if it got you right into the game faster. I don't have a feel for the cashshop's impact on the game. I never buy anything in a cash shop, though, so unless I'm stopped from progressing because I don't want to purchase something, I'm ok. I chose Templar, as I always do. Maybe one of the other factions has a memorable story that feels truncated or lost, but it didn't feel that way for me.

    2. The story has been cut inside the tutorial. It's Independent of which faction you picked.

      The original dream sequence was longer. The additional parts were cryptic for the new player, but they matter a lot once you get further into the game. You barely have a chance to understand it during the dream sequences after Solomon Island and after Egypt, but it really starts to matter in Tokyo.

      They removed that part and instead played parts of the conversation as background sound in the graveyard tutorial. As they play while you are killing oh so innovative zombies (no MMO ever had a "kill 3 Zombies" tutorial ever, except... make your own list... ) you don't really notice them. Your weapon sounds cover those background voices, unless you know when to stop attacking, do nothing and listen.

      So yes, somebody who just dabbled in TSW a long time ago and didn't get far into the story probably doesn't notice what was cut away. We veterans do.

      And it hurts, as it would've been so easy to maintain the story structure and at the same time integrate the tutorial in a much better way by putting the training for combat, puzzles and investigation missions into each factions HQ.

      Just place one of the holographic traning units there, they actually already exist in game in the sunken library and is used there for the training of members of all factions...

    3. I dabble in everything. Carrying the fury of the NGE with me for years, I have been determined not to get attached to any game or world ever again, which can be irrevocably changed overnight or shut down forever. I'm so sorry for what has happened to the game you love.

  3. FYI, in the character panel, under the weapon slots there are small boxes you can tick/untick, to show/hide each weapon on your charcter. As I am also running with a warlock, I just have the AR toggled on, because running around with a book strapped on your racing jacket is just not cool.

    1. Thanks for the tip! I have hundreds of books, so I'm not against books. I've had characters elsewhere who carried books in their hands, and it made sense that their magical characters brought out those tomes during a fight. But just on your back, without even any straps, what is that? And it doesn't look good with a tank top...

    2. Yeah, if it was strapped on my side, near the hip, and seemed more like a grimoire, then yeah I'd toggle it on. Also the basic skin of the book doesn't really help with the aesthetics. On TSW I had the Hell-themed book and that was just badass to look at, even while hovering on your back. Actually the fact that is was hovering there with no straps made the damn thing look more demonic.

    3. So there are some more interesting, magical looking books to be had? Maybe this is the Beginner Spellbook.
